Strong hands grabbed her shoulders and pulled her out of the bed in one quick movement leaving the blanket behind. Cranston put his fingers on either side of her face and pulled it close. Without warning, his lips crushed her mouth, sending first shock then sudden hot flares of excitement through her back. She tried to fight, but it was useless. Belle had never wanted Mike more. She melted into his embrace. Her body tightened at the middle sending a rush of soft moisture through her. Belle had not felt like this in years. It was like coming home.
~~~~~
Cranston had no idea why he did it. It was an uncontrollable impulse, kindled by Belle’s rare vulnerability and a crushing need to bring back the hunger they had spent six years suppressing. Pulling away, breathless, he said, “Belle, I’m sorry. This isn’t what…”But those gorgeous hazel eyes reached deep into his soul and stopped him. “Please, Mike.” Her winded voice was as soft as snow. “I want you.” The heady statement sent his hormones into overdrive. Consequences flew out the window, restraint lost all cohesion, and he told his better judgment to take a hike. Words like “trouble” and “bad idea” fell to pieces against his impulses and the feel of her hot skin under his hands. He pulled Belle against his body and devoured her. Her mouth glided over his lips, hot and soft, firing bright memories, sensual familiarities. Electric shocks coursed through his body. The urge to rip her clothes off and take her now was overpowering.
THE BELLE STALKER – CHAPTERS 16 & 17
There is nothing as sexy or exciting as that first kiss. The anticipation, the terror, the desire, and the mystery have fueled ballads, books, epic poems, and medieval classics. It has graced giant movie screens and rested at the heart of countless books. It is the beginning, the omega of love. And it might usher in an immutable bond that nothing can break, not even the heart.
More importantly, it is that first touch in a relationship that crosses a defined barrier between friendship and love.
If you look at the history of the kiss, it is interesting to note that the romantic kiss has its roots buried deeply in Western Civilization. Egypt had never heard of such a thing; Japan used a sweet kiss for children only; Ancient Africa had no concept of the idea. How sad for them. Greece, India, Assyria, and Rome used it widely and enjoyed it to the fullest extent possible. Thank you ancient world!
In writing romance, the kiss is the first romantic climax and for me, the most important. Every look, every touch, and every word the couple says to each other needs to be charged with this ultimate first step. I like to mix in missed opportunities, misunderstandings, and misdirection. When the kiss finally comes, I want it to explode off the page…and I hope I do that. Some of the best romances I’ve read make me want to flip to that part in the story just to relieve the tension, but I restrain myself.
I remember my very first kiss: I was eleven or twelve at church camp (aw, so many interesting things happen there, don’t they?). I met a blond haired, rosy cheeked boy of twelve in guimp class. He was GOREOUS! It was love at first site. For five agonizing days we talked and teased, flirted and floundered, until one night, alone outside the dinner hall the boy pushed me against the wall of the building in the shadows and pressed his lips to mine. I was terrified, thrilled, nauseous, and euphoric all at the same time. His lips were stiff (as I’m sure mine were too) but he pulled it off. My head was swimming and I couldn’t walk for bit afterwards. That first instinctual flutter of my heart sparked my first steps into sensuality. Nothing had ever felt so good. Since then I realized that kiss was clumsy, hard, and really quite unappealing, but it was my first; I remember it more clearly than any kiss since then, except the first with my husband of nineteen years.
So, tell us about your first kiss. Was it exciting? Disappointing? Did you swoon or dive in with both lips? I promise, I won’t tell if you don’t!
  1. I’d love to win, I need new reading material! I agree that first kisses should be momentous, specially since they can sometimes be disappointing in real life. Thank goodness for fiction!
  2. I actually don’t remember my first kiss–I know..tragic. It was with my now ex-husband so I most likely blocked it from my memory.
    My first kiss with my hubby of 2 years was like magic. It was then that I knew he was the one. I’d kissed others from the time of my divorce to the meeting of my now-hubby and no one affected me the way the new hubby did. His kisses, 4 years later, still make me weak in the knees!
    Thanks for the awesome excerpt and guest post.
    Happy Birthday too!
  4. My first kiss was with my cousins best friend. He was a couple of years older than me. I had liked him for awhile and wanted him to kiss me. I happened and it was magical. I had no clue, but I know that he had kissed other girls before. We did a lot of other kissing after that. I was in love(well I thought I was). The romance lasted a whole summer, and then a couple of months later I found out that he then was kissing my cousin.
    You are a new author for me and would love to win and read this book. Hope you have a great birthday. I would love to win and read your books. I have heard great things about them. Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win. I would love a brown scarf if I win.
  5. I’d love to enter 🙂 My first kiss was actually pretty exciting…with a boy I’d been crushing on for years. We were in a hot tub joking around, he kept trying to tickle me, then he pulled me in and WOAH. Very nice. It was pretty magical.
  6. *waves to Minnette* Happy Birthday!! Onto kisses, which is kinda hard for me cause my first kiss, was to me stupid. >.>; It was with a friend and I was teasing him and took his baseball cap and ran off with it. Only playing I got cornered and he kissed me in getting his hat back. I say stupid now, cause I really shouldn’t of done it, but it was thrilling, I was excited, scared, uneasy.. But it left me wanting more of course I was 17 or so it didn’t last but for the small trip.
    Man you are giving alot away today *squeals* I saw the last scarf you did when you posted pictures on BHBP group. and it looks awesome. I wouldn’t mind winning that. 😉 I hope you have an awesome day!
  7. Good morning everyone… Got up a little late! What amazing kissing stories! I want more… LOL
    Hi, Melissa! I’m with you… I love that first kiss.
    Thanks, Saph… That’s how I feel about my DH’s kisses too… and it’s been almost 19 years! LOL
    Oh, Juana, too funny – sloppy & wet! It’s funny about kids and kissing. I guess it’s a learned skill and you get better at it as you go along!
    Isn’t Summer love the best, Chris? I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!
    Ooo, a hot tub kiss! It sound magical, Michelle!
    I love that phrase “excited, scared, uneasy,” Yami… It’s that feeling that authors try to capture when they write about that first kiss. I think it’s one of those feelings you only get once in a while that you treasure. Thanks for the compliments on the scarf! I’ve finished two for the blog hop and am working on the third. Good luck!     1. It was in the 8th grade, at a friend’s party, and of course it was with the Casanova of the class. He knew it too. So… he was a good kisser, knocked me off my feet, but even with my inexperience I knew he was nothing but trouble.
      But the first kiss my hero gave me … I knew he was trouble, and I was all in for it!
      It didn’t knock me off my feet, but the world disappeared for awhile.
      A nice, long while.
      Thirty years later, and he can still manage to make the world disappear.
    First kisses…hmmm…can’t say that I remember my very first kiss…but I remember my first REAL kiss…it was in high school, probably Junior year, heading home after a party. One of the boys in the car pulled me into his arms, and we started kissing…and the kiss went on for the whole way home…and if I remember correctly, we asked the driver to drop me off last! lol, it was a fun memory, even to this day.
I will remember him always, His name was Glenn and he was the typical bad boy, dressed all in black and all the girls even if they denied it wanted him…He was my boyfriend until we moved away, I still wander what happened to him! sigh…LOL
    I loved this excerpt. I loved Cranston’s dilemma of “trouble” and “bad idea” vs. passion. That is great stuff!
    Now my first kiss? Geez, I’m older than dirt so it is a bit hard to remember that far back, but I do recall surprise, shock, headiness and all those things and it too, was clumsy because it was his first kiss too. So glad we learn from our mistakes!
I don’t remember the guy’s name or his face, but boy do I remember that kiss. It’s kind of like child birth; it’s almost instinctual, that first intimate gesture. Finding that right guy can take time, but it’s worth it. DH and I didn’t meet until after I had gone through a few husbands… I’m talking about that during the tour so stay tuned. :o)
    my first kiss was with a little red haired boy and his brother, they lived next door and were my brothers friends (10 and 9). i was 9 and a tomboy and i was always mad that they wouldn’t let me play. that day my brother was sick and i had gone over to see if they wanted to play and then i don’t remember the rest of what happened but the older boy kissed me and after his brother snuck up on me and kissed me on the cheek. i ran home and told my brother(yes i was a brat), needless to say i was not going back over there and the boys both had black eyes after my brother “talked” to them. LOL!
    Now of course i am a Big fan of the first kiss. # 😛
  25. My first lips to lips kiss with a boy was the day I turned 13. It was just after I finished my Bat Mitzvah service but before I’d left for the reception. The boy and I “dated” in the most innocent sense of the word for a year before we both grew out of the relationship.
    However, my first french kiss was when I was 16. The boy in question was shy and liked me from a distance (and I liked him back). One day, during lunch break, we were both hanging out in the school’s theatre, practicing a scene, when he dropped his script, pulled me into his arms, and laid that kiss on me. It was amazing! Post him, the next guy I kissed was horrible.
  26. Too funny, Isis! What is it about religious places for first kisses? That second one sounds amazing! I think my most romantic kiss was also theater oriented. I had joined a Shakespeare troupe the summer of my 16th birthday. The guy who played Romeo was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen and he fell for me too… despite the fact I was playing the old hag in the first act. We were in two different cars when we left and he shouted over to me, “I think I’m in love.” Thrilled the pants off of me (but not literally). We stopped the cars and he swept me into his arms and kissed me right there on the street in front of God and everybody! I didn’t mind in the least bit.
Since I have never fallen in love and doubt that I ever will, I figure that “magical moment” might never happen for me. But, I have kissed men I love (as friends) and enjoyed it. See, I was a late bloomer as I was painfully shy and spoke to NO ONE till the end of highschool so my first kiss was very, very late. Anyhoo, it was my first date and we were sitting in the car. He leaned over, as did I, and we bumped noses! So we tried again but we both turned our heads the other way and hit again. Finally, he turned my head and kissed me on my cheek!
  39. Well, it’s hard to remember my first kiss. I can tell that it happened when I was about 4 or 5 (yes that young LOL) and it was with a boy from my kindergarten. I don’t clearly remember WHY we kissed, maybe it was on a dare, maybe not! I remember that I liked him and it was more or less OK, if you consider that he almost French kissed me (at that age!). I still remembe his face (as a boy) but I don’t remember his name or where he was from or anything else. One other thing I remember I didn’t kiss a boy again till many years later 🙂
  40. My first real kiss? Not good. A guy grabbed me at a party and kissed me too hard and with his tongue. He smelled of beer and whatever cheese was on the party tray that night. I was mad because I couldn’t get away from him and I was humiliated because everybody could see it and people were laughing at me. If I had had a laser pistol that oaf would be ashes today. Because of him it was a very long time until I wanted to be kissed again.
    One reason I read romances is to remind myself that it doesn’t have to be bad, that there is at least the possibility of real love somewhere in the universe, even if it doesn’t happen to some people.
  45. I remember my first kiss like it was yesterday. It was the fall of ’94 and I was 14 years old, ready to take on the world. I had a huge crush on a boy in my grade who had moved away the previous year and then – miraculously! – moved back our 9th grade year. I really thought it was meant to be, because we had birthdays within 5 days of each other and that’s all you need, right?
    I remember walking those hallowed halls of our high school with my best friend (who is still my best friend to this day, many moons later), thinking to myself, “I love Norman so much, it would be so totally cool if he left a note in my locker for me.” The stars must have aligned that day, because he did leave me a note, asking me out.
    We didn’t live too far from each other, so after the last class of the day, we met in the front of the school and walked to his house, our backpacks slung over our shoulders like we were oh-so-cool. No one was home at his house, but he invited me in anyway, so we went to his room, where he turned out music and I sat on the bed looking at him expectantly. I had never been kissed before and I knew he was going to kiss me; I eagerly awaited his arms around me and his lips pressed against mine. He sat next to me and I turned my face to him. Our lips met, mine tentative, his more sure. His arms came around my shoulders, and then my waist, until we fell back on the bed. I was scared I’d mess up but heady enough with desire to keep kissing him in that frantic, lovesick way teenagers have. And we did, over and over and over.
    It was wonderful and innocent and I look back fondly, even though he later dumped me because I wouldn’t let him touch my boob. =D
    Thanks for the opportunity!
I’m not ugly and unattractive, I’ve never been a tomboy or just “one of the guys”. I’m actually quite the girl-next-door, except that I come from a very conservative and religious family and have been sheltered and overprotected for most of my life- hence, no kissing. Hopefully, some day I’ll find Mr. Right and we’ll work magic together:) So, sadly, no first-kiss story… yet! *wink*.
  51. Okay, I decided to tell the story. I was 17. I know, super old to have a first kiss, and I meet this guy at the cinnabun. We went on a date and before he took me home, he planted one on me. It was sloppy and super wet. Freaked me out.
  52. I would love to win this. My first kiss, it’s been too many, many years ago.
    It was the boy across the street, he was my kindergarten sweetheart.
    The neighbor kids dared us, so it was fast little peck on the lips. If I recall I wiped my lips off and kept wiping. HAHA! It was so great being young.
  53. Wow, I love this blog post! This took me back to that time when I had my first AWKWARD kiss with my ‘eventually-became-boyfriend-after-six-years’. It was really awkward! We kept seeing each other in school but we never actually talked. And when circumstances dumped us on the same park bench waiting for our rides. We exchanged a few words and hellos when all of a sudden he leaned over and planted a wet one. Right there. I was so surprised that when he pulled back I didn’t know what to say and we just sat there for a good hour not talking until our moms picked us up. It was really weird when six years later we saw each other again, all grown up and it was then I realized how cute he turned out now and when he asked me out I couldn’t resist those dimples and I said yes! 🙂
  54. First kisses are sometimes wonderful and sometimes, they are…. Let me tell you about my first kiss. I was twelve and the boy I was in love with was blond with blue eyes. He grabbed me and kissed me and I went screaming into the house, crying for my mother. When she asked what was wrong, I told her I was pregnant! I told her about the kiss and how it had made me pregnant and I was sorry and… She hugged me and,trying not to laugh, she told me I was fine. Gosh, I was stupid!
    I would love to win this book.
  55. My first kiss was when I was a kid and later, we meet again in high school and became my first love. Alas, there is no happy ending with that romance, but that first kiss I will always remember. Good luck with the book tour
  56. First kiss was definitely in my dream when i was about in 9th grade.. I was the shy girl at school, and any guy contact i had was saying hi to my brothers and cousin’s baseball teammates. hahahahah
    But my real-life first kiss, was not until my first year in college. It was very awkward. i remember it was at a party and me and this guy were dancing and it was just awkward, but never been kissed before me, was so excited.. hahhaha.
    now a couple years older (4 to be exact) I must say i like first kisses. 😉
  57. Uhm.. I can’t really remember my first kiss. I know I was around 13 and we were curious but it was more like pecks on the lips. My first full, open-mouthed French kiss was with my high school boyfriend, but it was not the tingle-inducing kind sadly. lol
    Thank you for the fantastic giveaway! 🙂
